EDITORS COMMENTS
Emma Jane Dymoke, later known as Lady Hartwell, is depicted in this beautiful portrait photograph taken circa 1845. Born into the esteemed Dymoke family, Emma was the daughter of Reverend Edward Dymoke and Anne Dymoke, née Coke. At the time this image was captured, Emma was a young and radiant woman, full of grace and elegance. Emma's life took a significant turn when she married Sir Francis Hartwell, a prominent figure in British society. Sir Francis was a baronet and the son of Sir Thomas Hartwell, 1st Baronet. Their union brought Emma into the Hartwell family, and she became Lady Hartwell. The photograph captures Emma's refined beauty and poise, with her dark hair styled in an intricate updo and her bright, expressive eyes gazing directly at the viewer. Her outfit, consisting of a high-necked, long-sleeved dress with a lace collar, is indicative of the fashionable attire of the time. Emma's marriage to Sir Francis marked the beginning of a new chapter in her life, one filled with wealth, status, and social connections. As Lady Hartwell, she would have attended numerous social events, charitable functions, and other engagements, representing her husband and the Hartwell family with grace and dignity. This photograph is a precious reminder of Emma Jane Dymoke's youth and beauty before she became Lady Hartwell, offering a glimpse into the life of a young woman on the cusp of a significant transformation. The image, taken circa 1845, is a testament to the rich history and heritage of the Dymoke and Hartwell families.
