EDITORS COMMENTS
Elisabeth of Wied (1843-1916), also known as Carmen Sylva, was the consort queen of Romania from 1869 until her husband, King Carol I, abdicated the throne in 1914. In this engraving by Jonnard, published in The Iberian Illustration in 1885, we see Carmen Sylva in her study, surrounded by the trappings of a contemporary European royal interior. The queen is seated in a plush, high-backed chair, her hands resting on a small table before her. A large, ornate fireplace dominates the room, its hearth aglow with fire. Books line the shelves, evidence of Carmen Sylva's literary interests and her role as a patron of the arts and education in Romania. Born a princess of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, Elisabeth was the daughter of a minor European house. Her marriage to Carol I, the first king of a unified Romania, brought her to the forefront of European politics and society. Throughout her long and eventful reign, Carmen Sylva was known for her intelligence, her beauty, and her strong will. She was a popular and beloved figure in Romania, and her legacy continues to be celebrated in the country today. This engraving, with its rich colors and intricate details, offers a glimpse into the life of a European queen consort in the late 19th century. The study, with its books, fireplace, and comfortable chair, speaks to the quiet, contemplative side of royal life, a side that is often overlooked in the grandeur and pomp of royal courts. The image of Carmen Sylva, deep in thought and surrounded by her books, serves as a reminder of the intellectual and cultural contributions of European queens consort, and of the important role they played in shaping the history of their countries.
