EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a marble sarcophagus unearthed in the ancient Greek city of Eleusis, now known as Elefsina in West Attica. The intricately carved sarcophagus dates back to the ancient world, featuring a mesmerizing relief depicting the legendary Calydonian Boar Hunt. This mythological tale recounts the heroic quest of the Epicurean king, Oeneus, to atone for an unintentional slight against Artemis, the goddess of the hunt. In retaliation, the goddess unleashed the monstrous Calydonian Boar, which terrorized the land and forced the local heroes, including Jason and Meleager, to band together for the hunt. The relief on the sarcophagus beautifully illustrates the frenzied scene, with hunters charging towards the boar, their faces etched with determination and fear. The boar, in turn, snarls and charges, its muscles taut with power. This ancient artifact, a testament to the rich mythological heritage of Greece, has captivated the imagination of generations. This photograph holds a special significance as it was taken during the 1940s, when the British Royal Air Force used the Elevsis aerodrome in Greece as a base during World War II. Roald Dahl, the renowned author, was among the pilots stationed there, flying Hurricanes. The sarcophagus, now housed in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens, stands as a bridge between the ancient and modern worlds, a reminder of the enduring power of Greek mythology.
