EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant postcard image captures Eleftherios Venizelos (1864-1936), the legendary Greek revolutionary and politician, during his exile in Paris in the year of his death, 1936. Venizelos, a central figure in modern Greek history, served as Prime Minister of Greece on two separate occasions, from 1910 to 1920 and from 1928 to 1932. His political career was marked by his unwavering commitment to the modernization and strengthening of Greece, as well as his advocacy for the country's entry into World War I on the side of the Allies. However, his progressive reforms and pro-Allied stance were not universally popular, and he faced numerous challenges both domestically and internationally. In 1922, following the defeat of the Greek army in the Greco-Turkish War, Venizelos was forced into exile once again, this time in Paris. In this photograph, taken shortly before his death, Venizelos is shown sitting in a garden, deep in thought, with a serene expression on his face. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the complex and tumultuous political career of this influential figure in Greek history. Despite his exile, Venizelos continued to be a significant force in Greek politics, and his legacy continues to be felt in Greece to this day. His commitment to modernization, democracy, and the strengthening of Greece's position in the international community remains an inspiration to many. This postcard, with its evocative image of Venizelos in exile, offers a glimpse into the personal side of this larger-than-life political figure and serves as a reminder of the enduring impact of his contributions to Greek history.
