EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored lithograph depicts Ephedra distachya and Ephedra altissima, commonly known as Efedra or Mahuang in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. The image is taken from Raimondo Petraroja's lithograph after an original illustration by Giorgio Amato, published in Tenore and Pasquale's Atlas of Popular Botany in 1870, Naples, Italy. Ephedra, a genus of small shrubs, has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. Ephedra distachya, also known as Ma Huang in Chinese medicine, and Ephedra altissima, or Ephedra vulgaris, have been particularly valued for their medicinal properties. The primary active compound in Ephedra is ephedrine, an alkaloid that acts as a bronchodilator and vasoconstrictor. In Chinese medicine, Ephedra has been used to treat various respiratory conditions, including asthma, bronchitis, and coughs. It has also been used to alleviate nasal congestion, fatigue, and fevers. In Ayurvedic medicine, Ephedra is known as Mahuang and is used to treat conditions such as rhinitis, sinusitis, and bronchitis. The intricate details of the lithograph show the delicate structure of the Ephedra plants, with their slender stems and small, scale-like leaves. The vibrant colors and meticulous shading add to the botanical beauty of the image, making it a fascinating historical artifact. The Atlas of Popular Botany, published in the late 19th century, was an essential reference work for botanical studies and continues to be a valuable resource for researchers and historians today.
