The image is taken from Raimondo Petraroja's lithograph after an original illustration by Giorgio Amato, published in Tenore and Pasquale's Atlas of Popular Botany in 1870, Naples, Italy. Ephedra, a genus of small shrubs, has been used in traditional medicine for thousands of years. Ephedra distachya, also known as Ma Huang in Chinese medicine, and Ephedra altissima, or Ephedra vulgaris, have been particularly valued for their medicinal properties.
