EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense gaze and noble bearing of Edward Montagu, 2nd Earl of Manchester (1602-1671). Montagu was a prominent figure in English politics during the reign of Charles II, serving as a parliamentary general and a statesman. Born into the noble Montagu family, Montagu's military career began early, and he saw action in the English Civil War on the side of the Parliamentarians. After the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, Montagu was appointed as a captain in the royal army, and he played a key role in suppressing the Monmouth Rebellion in 1685. Montagu's political career was equally distinguished. He was a member of Parliament from 1661 until his death, and he served as Lord Privy Seal and Lord President of the Council under Charles II. Montagu was known for his strong commitment to the Church of England and his support for the monarchy. Despite his loyalty to the crown, Montagu was not afraid to speak his mind and challenge unpopular policies. He was a vocal opponent of the Exclusion Bill, which sought to exclude the Catholic Duke of York from the line of succession. Montagu's outspokenness earned him the enmity of some powerful figures at court, but he remained a respected and influential figure in English politics until his death in 1671. This portrait, which dates from the late 17th century, captures Montagu in the prime of his life and career. The artist has skillfully rendered the intricate details of Montagu's richly decorated doublet and the subtle textures of his beard and hair. The portrait offers a glimpse into the world of the English aristocracy during the Restoration period and the complex political landscape of the time.
