1636 1699 Bishop Churchman Worcester Stillingfleet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the distinguished visage of Edward Stillingfleet (1636-1699), a prominent English churchman and Bishop of Worcester during the tumultuous 17th century. Stillingfleet's career spanned a period of significant religious and political upheaval in England, as the Church of England navigated the challenges of the English Civil War and the subsequent Restoration. Born in Yorkshire, Stillingfleet was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and ordained a deacon in 1660. He rose through the ranks of the Church, becoming a chaplain to King Charles II in 1661 and eventually being consecrated Bishop of Worcester in 1674. Stillingfleet was a prolific writer and theologian, known for his defense of the Anglican faith and his opposition to the nonconformist movement. He authored several influential works, including "The Doctinal Theology of the Anglican Church," which helped to solidify the Anglican position on key theological issues. Despite his loyalty to the Church of England, Stillingfleet found himself embroiled in political intrigue and controversy. He was a vocal critic of the controversial Archbishop of Canterbury, William Laud, and was briefly imprisoned during the Commonwealth period for his refusal to conform to the Puritan-leaning religious policies of the time. After the Restoration of the monarchy, Stillingfleet was rewarded with a prominent position in the Church and continued to write and defend Anglican doctrine. This portrait, likely painted during his tenure as Bishop of Worcester, captures the intellectual and spiritual depth of a man who dedicated his life to the defense of the Anglican faith in the face of political and religious upheaval.
