Born in Yorkshire, Stillingfleet was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and ordained a deacon in 1660. He rose through the ranks of the Church, becoming a chaplain to King Charles II in 1661 and eventually being consecrated Bishop of Worcester in 1674. After the Restoration of the monarchy, Stillingfleet was rewarded with a prominent position in the Church and continued to write and defend Anglican doctrine.
