EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the intellectual curiosity and dedication of Edward Lhuyd (alternatively spelled Lloyd), a Welsh scholar and archaeologist of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Born in Llanymynech, Shropshire, England, in 1660, Lhuyd is best known for his groundbreaking work in the fields of botany, archaeology, and antiquarian studies. Lhuyd's passion for learning was evident from an early age. He studied at the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge before traveling extensively throughout Europe to expand his knowledge. His travels took him to France, Italy, and the Netherlands, where he made significant contributions to the study of natural history and archaeology. Upon his return to Wales, Lhuyd became a fellow of the Royal Society and established a botanic garden in his native land. He also served as the keeper of the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, where he made important discoveries related to the prehistory of Britain. One of his most notable achievements was the identification of the native Welsh language as a distinct Celtic language, which challenged the prevailing belief that Welsh was a dialect of English. Lhuyd's legacy extended beyond his scholarly pursuits. He is credited with inspiring the founding of the Society of Antiquaries of London and the establishment of the National Museum of Wales. His meticulous records and extensive collections continue to inform research in the fields of botany, archaeology, and linguistics to this day. Edward Lhuyd passed away in 1709, leaving behind a rich and enduring legacy. This portrait, taken during the height of his career, serves as a testament to his unwavering commitment to the pursuit of knowledge and his significant contributions to the fields of botany, archaeology, and antiquarian studies.
