EDITORS COMMENTS

Henderson's distinguished career began in 1847 when he was appointed as the head of the penal colony in Western Australia. After 13 years of effective governance in the colony, Henderson returned to England and was subsequently appointed to the prestigious position of chairman of the board of directors of convict prisons. In 1869, Henderson's impressive record of leadership and administrative abilities caught the attention of the British government, leading to his appointment as the Chief Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. He succeeded the late Sir Richard Mayne, who had held the position since its inception in 1829. Henderson's tenure as Chief Commissioner was marked by his commitment to modernizing the police force and improving its efficiency. He introduced new technologies, such as telegraphs and fingerprinting, to aid in crime detection and prevention. Henderson also focused on improving the training and living conditions of police officers, ensuring that they were well-equipped to serve and protect the citizens of London. This photograph, taken soon after Henderson's appointment, captures him in his formal attire, exuding confidence and authority. The image serves as a testament to Henderson's impressive career and his significant contributions to the development of the Metropolitan Police Force.
