1809 1881 Harrington Stanhope Vanity Wyndham Coide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures Charles Wyndham Stanhope, the 7th Earl of Harrington, in an unexpected light. Born in 1809, Stanhope was a prominent figure in British society during the Victorian era. Known for his wit and charm, he was a regular subject of society gossip columns. In this image from Vanity Fair, Stanhope is depicted in a playful and unguarded moment, seemingly lost in thought as he gazes off into the distance. His relaxed posture and casual attire contrast sharply with the formal portraits that were typical of the time. Despite his lighthearted appearance, Stanhope was a man of substance. He served in the House of Commons and was a patron of the arts, supporting the likes of Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Barrett Browning. He was also a keen collector of antiquities and was known for his impressive art collection. Stanhope's life was not without scandal, however. He was married twice and had numerous affairs, including one with the famous actress Fanny Kemble. His scandalous behavior earned him a reputation as a rake and a rogue, but he remained popular among the social elite. This portrait, taken around the time of the Earl's death in 1881, offers a glimpse into the complex and intriguing life of a man who defied the conventions of his time. With its candid depiction of a man lost in thought, this image stands out as a unique and intriguing addition to the historical record of the 7th Earl of Harrington.
