EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "E R L Laboulaye: A Prominent Figure in 19th Century French Intellectual and Political Circles" This portrait depicts E R L Laboulaye, also known as Edouard Rene Lefebvre Laboulaye (1811-1883), a renowned French lawyer, writer, and historian. Laboulaye's intellectual and political influence during the 19th century left an indelible mark on French history. Born in Paris, Laboulaye studied law at the prestigious Sorbonne University and began his legal career in 1835. However, his passion for history and literature soon overshadowed his legal practice. He became a prolific writer, publishing numerous works on French history, politics, and literature. Laboulaye's most significant contribution to French history came with his advocacy for the restoration of the statue of Liberty in New York Harbor as a symbol of French-American friendship. In 1865, he wrote an influential article in the "Revue des Deux Mondes," which sparked public interest and ultimately led to the fundraising campaign for the statue's construction. The statue, a gift from France to the United States, was dedicated in 1886, long after Laboulaye's death. A committed republican, Laboulaye played a pivotal role in the establishment of the Third Republic in 1870. He served as the president of the National Assembly and was instrumental in drafting the new French constitution. This photograph captures Laboulaye in the prime of his life, with a thoughtful expression that reflects his deep commitment to the intellectual and political pursuits that shaped his legacy. The image serves as a testament to Laboulaye's enduring influence on French history and the transatlantic relationship between France and the United States.
