EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant photograph, taken around 1907, we find the Duke of Saxe-Coburg Gotha, Charles Edward (1884-1954), and his family gathered together. The Duke, a male-line grandson of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, held the British title of Duke of Albany until 1919. He is pictured here with his wife, Princess Victoria Adelaide of Schleswig-Holstein, the Duchess of Saxe-Coburg Gotha (1885-1970), who is holding their son, Johann Leopold, Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1906-1972). To the left of the Duke and Duchess, we see Prince Alexander of Teck (1874-1957), who was also known as Major-General Alexander Augustus Frederick William Alfred George Cambridge, 1st Earl of Athlone. He is seated with his wife, Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone (1883-1981), who is holding their daughter, Princess May - Lady May (Helen Emma) Abel Smith (1906-1994). The central seated figure is the Duke of Saxe-Coburg Gotha's mother, the Duchess of Albany, formerly Princess Helena of Waldeck and Pyrmont (1861-1922). This photograph captures a moment of familial warmth and connection, as the various members of the royal family come together to share in each other's company. The image is a testament to the complex web of royal relationships that existed during this time, with ties to multiple European monarchies and the British monarchy itself.
