Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Helena was the daughter of Eugene Zimmerman, a renowned railroad president and major stockholder in Standard Oil. Her marriage to William Montagu, the 9th Duke of Manchester, in 1900 was a closely guarded secret. The Duke's mother, Consuelo, was displeased with the union due to Helena's American heritage and her family's wealth. Despite the disapproval, the couple welcomed four children into the world.
