"Sir Henry Drummond Charles Wolff (1830-1908), a distinguished statesman of the late Victorian era, is depicted in this elegant photograph. Born on March 15, 1830, Wolff began his political career as a Liberal Member of Parliament for Southampton in 1865. He held various positions in the Liberal government, including Under-Secretary of State for the Home Office and Financial Secretary to the Treasury. Wolff's most notable achievement came when he was appointed as the Colonial Secretary in 1892, a position he held until 1895. During his tenure, he oversaw significant developments in the British colonies, including the annexation of Zanzibar and the establishment of the Protectorate over Uganda. He also played a crucial role in the resolution of the Matabeleland disturbances in Southern Rhodesia. Despite his political success, Wolff faced criticism for his handling of the Jameson Raid in 1895, which led to his resignation from the government. He continued to serve as a Member of Parliament until 1906. Sir Henry Drummond Charles Wolff was knighted in 1897 for his services to the Crown. He passed away on February 1, 1908, leaving behind a legacy as a dedicated and effective statesman who played a significant role in shaping British colonial policy during the late 19th century."
