The Dreyfus Affair, a controversial and deeply divisive episode in French history, had begun in 1894 when Dreyfus, a Jewish officer in the French Army, was falsely accused of treason and sentenced to life imprisonment on Devil's Island. The initial verdict was based on forged evidence, and the case quickly became a cause célèbre, with many prominent intellectuals and politicians rallying to Dreyfus's defense. In 1896, new evidence came to light, leading to a retrial, which is depicted in this image. The scene at Rennes was tense and dramatic.
