An intricately detailed watercolour illustration by Anna Atkins (1799-1871) of the Dentalium elephatinum, also known as the Elephant Tusk Shell or the Long Tusk Shell. This beautiful specimen is part of Atkins' groundbreaking collection of 256 original drawings, showcasing various genera of shells, published in the early 19th century. Atkins, an English botanist and photographer, was a pioneer in the field of photograms, using cyanotype process to create some of the earliest known photographic images of algae. However, her lesser-known work in illustrating marine invertebrates, particularly molluscs, is equally impressive. The Dentalium elephatinum is a type of scaphopod, or tusk shell, belonging to the family Dentaliidae. The shell's elongated shape and distinct ridge, which resembles an elephant's tusk, give it its common name. The shell's surface is adorned with intricate grooves and ridges, adding to its visually striking appearance.
