EDITORS COMMENTS
In this compelling photograph, David Cameron MP, the leader of the opposition party in the United Kingdom, is seen visiting British troops stationed in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The visit took place on July 25, 2006, during a fact-finding mission alongside Shadow Defence Secretary, Liam Fox MP. The purpose of their visit was to meet with British Commanders, governmental agencies, and troops currently serving in the province. The MPs began their tour at the British base in Lashkar Gah, the provincial town of Helmand. Lashkar Gah is home to the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT), an organization comprised of military and governmental agencies. The PRT's mission is to provide security and create a safe environment in Helmand Province while supporting the Afghan government and local authorities in building a strong government and creating jobs. David Cameron and Liam Fox were received by the British Forces Commander in Afghanistan, Brigadier Ed Butler, and Commander Helmand Task Force, Colonel Charlie Knaggs. They then proceeded to meet troops from the Provincial Reconstruction Team Operations Company. Later, they were given a tour of British military vehicles, including a Snatch Land Rover and a Weapons Mount Installation Kit (WMIK) Land Rover. These vehicles are essential for the Operations Company, which carries out daily patrols in the Lashkar Gah area and works closely with the local Afghan National Army (ANA) and National Police (ANP), mentoring them on security matters and conducting joint operations. This photograph was taken during Operation HERRICK IV, the UK's deployment into Helmand Province, Southern Afghanistan.
