This exquisite handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, taken from Dumont de Sainte-Croix's Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology, showcases two fascinating bird species native to Asia - the Cuckoo Roller (Leptosomus discolor) and the Sunda Coucal (Centropus nigrorufus). The image, published by F.G. Levrault in Paris between 1816 and 1830, was illustrated by Jean Gabriel Pretre, a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo, and engraved by Guyard under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin. The Cuckoo Roller, with its distinctive black and white plumage, is a member of the roller family, known for its unique method of nesting - it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds, allowing the host species to raise its young.
