EDITORS COMMENTS
This enchanting portrait captures the youthful beauty and intelligence of Stephanie Felicite Ducrest de St. Aubin, Comtesse de Genlis, also known as Madame de Genlis, a French writer and educator of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in 1746, she was the illegitimate daughter of a French nobleman and a Swiss woman. Despite her humble beginnings, she went on to become one of the most influential figures in French literature and education. Madame de Genlis began her literary career in 1782 with the publication of her first novel, "St. Foy," which was an instant success. She went on to write over 100 works, including novels, plays, and educational texts. Her most famous work, "Adelaide and Theodore," a novel for children, was published in 1804 and is still in print today. Madame de Genlis was also a pioneer in the field of education for girls. She believed that girls should be educated in the same way as boys and advocated for the inclusion of literature, history, and science in their curriculum. She opened a school for girls in Paris in 1786, which was one of the first of its kind. This portrait, taken when she was young, shows Madame de Genlis with an air of sophistication and intelligence. Her piercing gaze and elegant attire suggest a woman of refinement and culture. Despite the challenges she faced as a woman in a male-dominated society, she overcame adversity to become a respected writer and educator. Her legacy continues to inspire women and girls around the world to pursue their dreams and make their mark on history. Madame de Genlis' life spanned the tumultuous years of the French Revolution and the rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. She remained active in literary and educational circles until her death in 1830, leaving behind a rich body of work that continues to captivate readers today.
