Crossing Rappahannock

EDITORS COMMENTS
Crossing the Rappahannock: A Pivotal Moment in the American Civil War This evocative print captures the intensity and danger of the Battle of Fredericksburg, which took place between December 11 and 15, 1862, during the American Civil War. The scene depicts Union infantry bravely crossing the Rappahannock River in pontoon boats, under heavy fire from Confederate sharpshooters hidden along the Virginia banks. The Rappahannock River, a major waterway in northern Virginia, served as a strategic barrier during the Civil War. Union General Ambrose Burnside planned to cross the river and attack the Confederate forces under General Robert E. Lee, who were entrenched on the heights of Marye's Heights. The Union troops, seen here in the print, were making their way across the river in pontoon boats, with the aid of the United States Navy. As the Union soldiers disembarked from the boats, they were met with a hail of bullets from the Confederate sharpshooters, who were expert marksmen and had a clear advantage from their elevated positions. The Union troops returned fire, engaging in a fierce and deadly exchange. Despite the heavy casualties, the Union troops managed to establish a foothold on the opposite bank, paving the way for a larger assault on Marye's Heights. The Battle of Fredericksburg ultimately ended in a costly Union defeat, with over 12,000 casualties. However, the determination and bravery displayed by the Union soldiers during the river crossing became a symbol of their resilience and commitment to the cause of the Union. This print, which dates between 1863 and 1870, is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the American Civil War and the courage and tenacity of the soldiers who fought in it.
