Croatia - Zadar (Zara) - The Harbour with Italian passenger Seaplane Airios, which ran a daily service over the 92 mile route between Ancona, Italy and Zadar. The military seaplane base Ancona (Idroscali Militare Ancona) was an airfield in Ancona, 210 kilometers north-northeast of Rome. The airfield was built in the summer of 1917 for the defense of Ancona. Upon the end of hostilities, the Ancona seaplanes formed the first connection to the liberated lands of Istria and Dalmatia, also operating passenger and postal connection to Zara (Zadar) as shown here. By 1924 the airfield was replaced by the new Idroscalo Ancona across the harbour on the south pier. Date: circa 1920

This evocative photograph captures the historic moment when an Italian passenger seaplane, the Airios, docks at the harbor of Zadar (Zara), Croatia, circa 1920. The seaplane, a biplane with distinctive wings and floats, had made the daily journey over the 92-mile route from Ancona, Italy. Ancona's seaplane base, Idroscali Militare Ancona, was established in the summer of 1917 for the defense of the city. With the end of hostilities, these seaplanes became the first connection to the liberated lands of Istria and Dalmatia. The Airios not only operated military and supply missions but also provided a passenger and postal service to Zadar. The harbor, with its tranquil bay and picturesque port, offers a serene backdrop to this historic moment in transport history. By 1924, Ancona's seaplane base had been replaced by a new facility across the harbor on the south pier.
