Creating model for flight simulator, RAF Lyneham, Wiltshire
Man working on a model for a flight simulator for use at RAF Lyneham, Wiltshire. Before computers, flight simulators used actual models of different airfields in order to train pilots. The model being created here was of the RAF base on Gan Island in the Indian Ocean. A colour TV camera relayed a picture of the scale model to a screen in the mock up of a Hercules Transport aircraft. Detail on the model was so precise that final work had to be carried out under a magnifying lens. Date: circa 1976

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph from the 1970s, a dedicated model maker is meticulously crafting a detailed replica of RAF Base on Gan Island in the Indian Ocean. Located at RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire, England, this model was designed for use in a flight simulator, an essential training tool for pilots before the advent of advanced computer technology. The model, which required painstaking precision, was connected to a colour TV camera that transmitted a live image of the miniature airfield to a screen within the mock-up of a Hercules Transport aircraft. The intricate detailing on the model was so precise that the final touches had to be made under the magnifying lens, ensuring every feature was accurately represented. The era of flight simulators using actual models of airfields marked an important milestone in aviation training. These simulators allowed pilots to experience various flight conditions and scenarios in a controlled environment, enhancing their skills and preparing them for real-life missions. The model being created here was just one of many that contributed to the success of this innovative training method during the 1970s. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the dedication and craftsmanship required to create these intricate models and the crucial role they played in preparing pilots for their careers. Circa 1976, RAF Lyneham, Wiltshire, England. (Rights Managed from Mary Evans Prints Online)
