Count Sebastien Charles Joseph de Croix, better known as the Count of Clerfayt, was a prominent Austrian military commander during the late 18th century. Born in France in 1733, Clerfayt joined the Austrian military in 1752 and quickly rose through the ranks due to his exceptional military skills and strategic acumen. This striking portrait, believed to have been taken around 1785, captures the Count in the prime of his military career. Clerfayt's piercing gaze and stern expression convey a sense of determination and resolve, reflecting the intense focus and leadership required to lead troops in battle.
