EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the Coronation Thrones used during the enthronisation stage of the ceremony for the coronation of King George V in June 1911. These thrones were a crucial part of the coronation proceedings, following the crowning of the King on St. Edward's Chair. Each coronation featured unique thrones, and these were reproduced by the renowned craftsmen at Messrs Morris, specifically William Morris, from Jacobean originals at Knole. The thrones boast X-shaped back supports of beechwood and upholstery of crimson silk damask, designed by William Morris some years prior. The silk was dyed with pure madder and woven on the Morris looms at Merton Abbey, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into creating these regal seats. The Coronation Thrones are a testament to the rich history and tradition of the British monarchy. The Jacobean design, with its intricate patterns and vibrant colors, adds an air of grandeur and elegance to the already momentous occasion. The thrones were not only a symbol of the King's power and authority but also a reflection of the artistic and cultural heritage of the time. The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the historic event and the intricate details of the coronation ceremony. It serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving our cultural heritage and the role that craftsmanship continues to play in shaping our history.
