The Coronation Chair, also known as King Edwards Chair, in Westminster Abbey, London, shortly before the coronation of King George V. It was commissioned in 1301 by King Edward I to contain the coronation stone of Scotland, known as the Stone of Scone, which he captured from the Scots. The chair was named after Englands only canonised king, Edward the Confessor. It was carved from oak -- the four gilded lions at its feet are later additions. Date: 1937

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, the Coronation Chair, also known as King Edward's Chair, sits proudly in Westminster Abbey, London, on the eve of King George V's coronation in 1937. The ancient chair, commissioned by King Edward I in 1301, is named after England's only canonised monarch, St. Edward the Confessor. The chair was designed to house the coronation stone of Scotland, known as the Stone of Scone, which Edward I had captured from the Scots. Carved from oak, the chair's intricate design showcases the rich history of the British monarchy. The four gilded lions at its feet are later additions, symbolizing the power and strength of the monarchy. The chair's significance extends beyond its regal appearance, as it has been used in every English and British coronation since 1308. The Coronation Chair holds a unique place in the annals of British history. Its presence in Westminster Abbey serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of the monarchy and the traditions that have shaped the country's political and cultural landscape. The anticipation of a new monarch's reign is palpable in the air, as the Coronation Chair awaits the next sovereign to take their rightful place upon it. This photograph captures the essence of history and tradition, offering a glimpse into the past and the promise of the future.
