1413 Armour Banquet Ceremony Challenge Champion Chivalric Coronation Coronations Feast Horseback Knight Knights Ritual Tradition Westminster

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the grandeur and tradition of the Coronation Banquet of King Henry V, held in Westminster Hall in 1413. The newly crowned monarch, Henry V, sits regally at the head of the long table, surrounded by his nobles and knights, all dressed in their finest attire. At the entrance of the hall, the King's Champion, an ancient and chivalric office instituted by William I, awaits. Clad in armor belonging to the King, the Champion prepares to perform his ceremonial duty. The Champion, an embodiment of royal power and authority, rides into the hall on horseback, challenging anyone who does not pledge their loyalty and support to the new King. The gauntlet is thrown down, a symbol of defiance and a call to arms for those who would oppose the monarch. The Champion's fee for this service is the suit of armor the King wears and the cup from which he drinks, a testament to the deep-rooted tradition and ritual of the coronation ceremony. This historical event, steeped in medieval chivalry and pageantry, represents a pivotal moment in English history. The Coronation Banquet of King Henry V marked the beginning of his reign, which would see England emerge as a major European power. The image of the King's Champion, a knight on horseback, clad in armor, and challenging all to pledge their allegiance, remains a powerful symbol of monarchical power and the enduring tradition of the coronation ceremony.
