EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored aquatint print depicts the Carolina Parakeet, Conuropsis carolinensis, from Plate 26 of John James Audubon's iconic work, "Birds of America." The original double elephant folio was published between 1827 and 1830, and this print was engraved, printed, and hand-colored by R. Havell (& Son) in London. The Carolina Parakeet was a native parrot species to North America, with a distinctive red, green, and yellow plumage. Sadly, this vibrant bird is now extinct, with the last known individual dying in captivity in 1918. Audubon's meticulous attention to detail captures the unique features of the Carolina Parakeet, from its large, curved beak to its long, graduated tail feathers. The Carolina Parakeet was a social bird, often found in flocks, and was known to inhabit swamps, marshes, and forests along the eastern coast of the United States. In this print, we see a group of Carolina Parakeets perched among the branches of a tree, their bright feathers contrasting against the natural greens and browns of their environment. Audubon's "Birds of America" is considered a masterpiece of the art of ornithology, and this print is a testament to the skill and dedication of the artist and his team. The intricate aquatint technique used to create the print allows for a lifelike representation of the Carolina Parakeet, capturing its beauty and character for future generations to appreciate. Today, this print is a valuable and sought-after piece of natural history art, and it serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and protecting the natural world around us. The extinction of the Carolina Parakeet is a reminder of the consequences of human actions, and it underscores the need for continued efforts to conserve and protect endangered species and their habitats.
