EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely hand-colored print depicts the Common Coot (Fulica atra), a distinctive waterbird native to Europe, Asia, and Africa. The image was meticulously drawn and engraved by George Graves (1786-1873) for his seminal work, "British Ornithology," published in Walworth, London, in 1821. Graves was an accomplished artist, engraver, and publisher who made significant contributions to the fields of botanical and ornithological illustration. The Common Coot is easily identified by its distinctive black and white plumage, with a glossy black head and neck, white underparts, and red eyes. This bird is well-adapted to life in and around water, with webbed feet that enable it to swim and dive efficiently. The Common Coot is also an omnivorous bird, feeding on a wide range of aquatic plants, insects, and small invertebrates. This particular print is a beautiful example of the copperplate engraving technique, which involves creating an image by etching lines into a copper plate, which is then inked and pressed onto paper to create a print. The hand-coloring adds an additional layer of detail and vibrancy to the image, making it a stunning work of art as well as a valuable scientific record. The history of ornithology in the early 19th century was a time of great discovery and exploration, with naturalists and illustrators documenting new species and expanding our understanding of the natural world. Graves' "British Ornithology" was an important contribution to this body of work, and this print of the Common Coot is a testament to his skill and dedication to the field.
