EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored botanical copperplate engraving, taken from Joshua Hamilton's Culpeper's English Family Physician; or Medical Herbal, published in London in 1792 by W. Locke, showcases three varieties of Cleavers (Galium): Common or European Cleavers (G. aparine), Northern Cleavers (G. boreale), and Little Cleavers (G. minus). The Common Cleavers, depicted in the center of the print, are characterized by their slender, hooked hairs that cling to clothing and fur, making them easily identifiable. They have been used in herbal medicine for centuries due to their diuretic, lymphatic, and anti-inflammatory properties. To the left, Northern Cleavers are shown with smaller, smoother leaves and fewer hooked hairs. They are native to colder regions in Europe and Asia and have been used for similar medicinal purposes as Common Cleavers. On the right, Little Cleavers are distinguished by their tiny, round leaves and lack of hooked hairs. They are often found in damp, shady locations and have been used in traditional medicine for treating skin conditions and as a diuretic. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving is a testament to the artistry and scientific knowledge of the time. It serves as a reminder of the rich history of botanical exploration and the importance of natural remedies in medicine. The print is a valuable resource for botanists, historians, and anyone with an appreciation for the natural world and the beauty of botanical illustrations.
