A Peek into the World of Cecil Aldin's Toy Making at Chiswick Art Workers Guild, Bedford Park (1903) This photograph offers a rare glimpse into the bustling workshop of the Chiswick Art Workers Guild, where members were engrossed in the meticulous process of manufacturing Cecil Aldin's beloved handmade toys. The toys, including the iconic toy rockers, were crafted to the exacting specifications of the renowned illustrator, Cecil Aldin. These exquisite wooden creations, adorned with intricate animal designs, were sold at esteemed retailers such as Liberty, The Woodbury Gallery on Bond Street, and Story's in Kensington. Cecil Aldin, a resident of Bedford Park, designed not only the toys but also nursery friezes, wallpapers, embroidery on clothes, and various other decorative items. His close friend and neighbor, Charles Ingham, oversaw the manufacturing and distribution of these delightful toys. Aldin shared that the profits from the toy sales were being saved for his children, Dudley and Gwendoline. Tragically, Dudley was later killed during the First World War. The Chiswick Art Workers Guild, comprised of skilled artisans and craftswomen, played a pivotal role in bringing Aldin's designs to life. Their dedication and expertise transformed simple toys into cherished keepsakes, reflecting the spirit of collaboration and creativity that thrived within this vibrant artistic community.
