China - Shanghai - Second Sino-Japanese War 1937

China - Shanghai - Sino-Japanese incident 1937 (The Battle of Shanghai) - The Chinese position near a bridge over the creek on the Woosung Road in East Shanghai. The Battle of Shanghai was the first of the twenty-two major engagements fought between the National Revolutionary Army (NRA) of the Republic of China (ROC) and the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) of the Empire of Japan during the Second Sino-Japanese War. It was one of the largest and bloodiest battles of the entire war. As pictured on this card, Chinese soldiers had to rely primarily on small-caliber weapons in their defense of the city, against the overwhelming onslaught from air, naval, and ground forces of the Japanese. EDITORS COMMENTS

This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment during the Battle of Shanghai in 1937, as Chinese soldiers take up defensive positions near a bridge over the Woosung Creek on East Shanghai's outskirts. The Second Sino-Japanese War, which began in 1937, was one of the largest and bloodiest conflicts of the 20th century, with the Battle of Shanghai being its first major engagement. The Chinese National Revolutionary Army (NRA) of the Republic of China (ROC) faced an overwhelming onslaught from the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) in this battle, which involved intense fighting on the ground, as well as significant air and naval bombardment. The soldiers in this image are seen fortifying their position with sandbags, barbed wire, and a makeshift barricade. Their small-caliber weapons are their primary means of defense against the Japanese invasion. The bridge, a strategic point of entry into the city, is a focal point of the battle. The creek, which runs alongside the bridge, would have provided some cover for the Chinese forces, but also made them vulnerable to Japanese amphibious assaults. The Battle of Shanghai marked a turning point in the war, with the Japanese ultimately gaining control of the city. The conflict lasted for several months, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during this pivotal moment in Chinese and Japanese history.
