1. Title: "Charles III, Duke of Savoy (1486-1553), Known as 'Le Bon' (The Good)" Charles III, Duke of Savoy, also known as 'Le Bon' (The Good), was a prominent figure in European politics during the 16th century. Born in 1486, he ruled the House of Savoy from 1504 until his death in 1553. This evocative portrait captures the duke's distinguished character and regal presence. Charles III was the eldest son of Philip II, Duke of Savoy, and Margaret of Austria. He was educated in the courts of Burgundy and France, which greatly influenced his political outlook and alliances. In 1501, he married Anne of France, a sister of King Louis XII, further strengthening Savoy's ties with the French monarchy. Despite his close relationship with France, Charles III maintained an independent foreign policy. He skillfully navigated the complex web of European politics, balancing alliances with various powers, including the Holy Roman Empire, Spain, and the Papacy. His diplomatic efforts contributed to the Peace of Cambrai in 1529, which temporarily put an end to the Italian Wars. Charles III was also a patron of the arts and learning, founding the University of Turin in 1475 and supporting scholars and artists. He is remembered for his patronage of the humanist Desiderius Erasmus and the architect Philibert Delamare. In this portrait, Charles III is depicted in the regal attire of a 16th-century duke, with a serious yet compassionate expression. The artist masterfully captures the duke's intelligence, wisdom, and strength, reflecting his reputation as a just and capable ruler. Charles III's reign marked a period of relative peace and prosperity for the Duchy of Savoy. His diplomatic skills, patronage of the arts, and commitment to the welfare of his people solidified his legacy as one of the most influential rulers in Savoy's history.
