EDITORS COMMENTS
Charles the Bald (823-877 AD), also known as Charles II, was the King of West Francia and Italy during the Carolingian Dynasty. This handcolored copperplate drawing and engraving by Leopold Massard, from the publication "French Costumes from King Clovis to Our Days," offers a captivating portrayal of Charles in his regal attire. Charles is depicted wearing a chlamys, a type of cloak that was a symbol of Roman imperial authority. The chlamys is fastened at the shoulder with a brooch, adorned with the Fleur-de-Lis, a decorative design that would later become the symbol of the French monarchy. The king wears a simple tunic beneath the chlamys, and holds a scepter in his right hand, signifying his royal power. In his left hand, he holds an orb, which symbolizes the world and his dominion over it. A cross is also visible on the orb, reflecting his role as a Christian ruler. The background of the image is a clouded sky, adding a sense of mystery and intrigue to the portrait. The intricate details of the engraving, from the delicate folds of the chlamys to the intricate patterns on the king's crown, showcase the skill and artistry of Leopold Massard. Charles the Bald was the eldest son of Louis the Pious, and ruled over the western part of the Carolingian Empire after his father's death. He was also a Holy Roman Emperor, and played a significant role in the political and religious developments of Europe during the Middle Ages. This portrait provides a glimpse into the fashion and iconography of the medieval period, and offers a fascinating insight into the life and reign of one of Europe's most influential rulers.
