EDITORS COMMENTS
In this handcolored copperplate engraving, we witness the ancient Roman gods Chaos, Cybele, Rhea, and Saturn, depicted in a scene of creation and the passage of time. The image, engraved by Jacques Louis Constant Lacerf after illustrations by Leonard Defraine, is taken from the comprehensive collection "Mythology in Prints, or Figures of Fabled Gods," published in Paris around 1820. At the center of the composition, Chaos, the primordial god of the void and the source of all creation, is shown as a swirling, chaotic mass of darkness and formlessness. Surrounding Chaos, the earth goddess Cybele, often referred to as the Great Mother, rides her lion-drawn chariot, symbolizing her protective and nurturing role in the universe. To her left, Rhea, the goddess of fertility and motherhood, cradles a young Saturn in her arms. Saturn, the god of agriculture, time, and the harvest, is depicted as a mature, bearded man, holding a scythe and a cornucopia. He is the embodiment of the cycle of life, death, and rebirth, as well as the passage of time. The interplay of these deities highlights the intricate relationships between creation, destruction, and the continuity of life. The intricate details of this engraving are brought to life through the delicate application of handcoloring, adding depth and vibrancy to the image. The classical mythology depicted in this print offers a glimpse into the rich history and cultural significance of the ancient Roman pantheon, making it a valuable and captivating work of art.
