EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 18th century illustration depicts the Long-tailed Wattled Bat, Chalinolobus tuberculatus, a fascinating mammal native to Australasia. The bat is shown in intricate detail, with its distinctive long, wattled tail and pointed ears, characteristic of the Chiroptera order. The illustration was created during Captain James Cook's second voyage of discovery, between 1772 and 1775, by the renowned naturalist Johann Georg Adam Forster. Forster, who accompanied Cook on his expedition, meticulously documented the natural history of the lands they explored, including this depiction of the Long-tailed Wattled Bat. The Long-tailed Wattled Bat is an arboreal, nocturnal creature, commonly known as the Evening Bat or Common Bat in some regions. It is a member of the Eutheria, a subclass of mammals, and is classified within the order Chiroptera, which means 'hand-wing.' This bat is considered endangered due to habitat loss and fragmentation, making this historical record of its appearance all the more valuable. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of George Forster, the son of Johann Georg Adam Forster. George Forster was also an accomplished naturalist and artist, and his work was published in several notable scientific journals of the time. This particular illustration is a testament to the rich discoveries made during Cook's voyages of exploration and the invaluable contributions of naturalists like Forster to our understanding of the natural world.
