Born in 1865, Cavell arrived in Brussels in 1895 to work as a governess and later became a nurse in 1897. She established the nursing institute in 1907, providing training for nurses and offering medical care to the underprivileged in the community. The outbreak of World War I brought unprecedented challenges to Cavell and her institution.
