EDITORS COMMENTS
Castel Sant'Angelo, a historic landmark in Rome, stands proudly on the western bank of the Tiber River. Originally constructed as a mausoleum by Emperor Hadrian for himself and his successors in 139 AD, the structure was later fortified during the reign of Emperor Aurelian in the 3rd century AD. Known as the Mausoleum of Hadrian, this elaborate tomb was later named Castel Sant'Angelo, or the Castle of Saint Angel, due to the legend of Saint Michael the Archangel appearing to Pope Gregory I on the castle's terrace during the plague in 590 AD. The bridge connecting the castle to the city, Ponte Sant'Angelo, was also built by Hadrian and named Pons Aelius. The bridge's statues of angels holding the instruments of the Passion of Christ were added during the papacy of Pope Clement VII in the 16th century. The cyclical nature of the River Tiber, as it winds its way through the Eternal City, adds to the romantic and timeless allure of this iconic image. The Castel Sant'Angelo, with its rich history and stunning architecture, is a testament to the enduring beauty and cultural significance of Rome. This photograph, taken circa 1910, captures the essence of the Castel Sant'Angelo and its surroundings, offering a glimpse into the past and the timeless allure of this magnificent structure. The image showcases the castle's imposing presence, the graceful arches of Ponte Sant'Angelo, and the gentle flow of the Tiber River. The black and white composition adds a sense of nostalgia and timelessness, making it a captivating piece of art and a reminder of the rich history of Rome.
