EDITORS COMMENTS
This marble bust, dated between 203 and 204 A.D., depicts the Roman Emperor Caracalla (188-217) as a young child. Caracalla, whose birth name was Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, was the son of the renowned Roman Emperor Septimius Severus and the grandnephew of the powerful Roman Empress Julia Domna. He ascended to the throne at the age of twenty-three following the death of his father. The bust, now housed at the Carlsberg Glyptotek Museum in Copenhagen, Denmark, is a rare and precious survivor from the Severan Dynasty. The intricately carved features of the young Caracalla's face reveal a striking resemblance to his father, with a strong jawline, piercing gaze, and a hint of a serious expression. The bust's fine details, such as the curly locks of hair and the delicate folds of the clothing, demonstrate the exceptional skill of the Roman sculptor. Caracalla's reign was marked by significant military campaigns, most notably against the Parthians, as well as social and economic reforms, including the granting of Roman citizenship to all free men in the empire. Despite his controversial policies, Caracalla is remembered as an influential and powerful Roman emperor. This child portrait offers a unique glimpse into the early life of this historical figure, providing a tangible connection to the rich and complex history of ancient Rome.
