EDITORS COMMENTS
Captain the Hon. Edward Loxley-Browne VC, DSO, RN, a gallant officer of the Royal Navy during World War I, is depicted in this poignant portrait as he stood resolute on the bridge of his mighty battleship, HMS Formidable. The year was 1915, and the Formidable was engaged in the fierce Battle of Dogger Bank against the German High Seas Fleet. Tragically, the Formidable was struck by a torpedo, and the ship began to sink. Despite the imminent danger, Captain Loxley remained at his post, demonstrating unwavering courage and commitment to his duty. Accompanying Captain Loxley in this evocative image is his loyal terrier, Bruce. The faithful canine companion remained by his master's side throughout the battle, providing comfort and companionship in the face of adversity. As the ship went down, Bruce reportedly swam alongside it, refusing to abandon his beloved owner. The poignant tale of Captain Loxley and Bruce has become a symbol of loyalty and devotion during the tumultuous times of the First World War. The image of the captain and his dog, standing together on the bridge of the Formidable, is a testament to the deep bond between man and animal, and the enduring strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. The Formidable, along with many other ships, was eventually sunk during the Battle of Dogger Bank, which took place on January 24, 1915. Captain Loxley and his faithful companion, Bruce, were among the many lives lost during the fierce engagement. The terrier's body was later found washed up at Abbotsbury, a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the Great War.
