EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is a 19th century illustration of a group of Capra nubiana, also known as Nubian ibexes, taken from Plate 18 of the Symbolae Physicae section: Zoologica I. Mammalia by the renowned German zoologist Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg. The plate features an adult male, an adult female, and a juvenile female Nubian ibex. Nubian ibexes are large, horned mammals belonging to the family Bovidae, order Artiodactyla, and suborder Caprinae. They are native to the mountainous regions of North Africa, specifically in Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt. These agile and powerful animals are known for their striking appearance, with their curved, spiraled horns, thick coats, and elongated, slender limbs. The adult male, depicted in the center of the image, is shown in all his majesty, with his large, curved horns and powerful build. The adult female, on the left, is more subtly adorned, with smaller, more delicate horns and a more slender body. The juvenile female, on the right, is still growing into her horns and displays the characteristic spotted coat of young Nubian ibexes. Ehrenberg, a pioneering figure in the field of zoology, meticulously documented and described the natural history of this and many other species during his extensive travels and research. His work, published between 1795 and 1876, remains a valuable resource for understanding the natural world of the past and present. This beautiful illustration not only showcases the natural beauty of the Nubian ibex but also highlights the remarkable work of a dedicated scientist and artist. It is a testament to the enduring fascination that animals hold for us and the importance of documenting and preserving their natural history for future generations.
