Caliph Stork, an eastern tale
Caliph Stork, an eastern tale -- the Caliph asks Selim the Learned to decipher a document for him which he has bought from the peddler. Selim says it is in Latin and says that if he speaks the magic word Mutabor he can change into an animal and understand animal languages. He can change himself back to human shape again by saying the same word. But he must be careful not to laugh while in animal shape, because then he will forget the magic word and have to remain an animal. (2 of 5) Date: circa 1890s

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this image from the 1890s, we find Caliph Stork, the ruler of the Middle East, engrossed in a mysterious document with the help of Selim the Learned. The Caliph, adorned in his grand turban and regal robes, sits on a plush chair, holding a hookah pipe in one hand, as he ponders over the cryptic text. Selim, a wise and learned man, sits before him, deep in thought as he deciphers the document. The document, purchased from a wandering peddler, is written in an unfamiliar language, later identified as Latin. Selim, with a furrowed brow, mutters the magic word "Mutabor" under his breath. In an instant, he transforms into a magnificent stork, his human form replaced by the graceful, elegant shape of the bird. With this transformation, Selim gains the ability to understand the language of animals. The Caliph, intrigued by the magic word, asks Selim to interpret the animal languages for him. Selim, in his stork form, listens intently to the chirps and calls of the birds in the palace gardens, relaying their messages to the Caliph. Once the task is complete, Selim reverts back to his human form by repeating the magic word. The scene is a beautiful representation of the magic and wonder of the Eastern tales, filled with intrigue, wisdom, and the power of language. The image captures the essence of the Middle East, with its rich history, exotic locales, and the grandeur of the Caliph's court.
