EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph, featured on the front cover of The Bystander magazine in January 1925, introduces Hon. Ruth Mary Clarisse Ashley, the debutante daughter of Lt-Col Wilfred Ashley, 1st Baron Mount Temple, and sister of the renowned socialite, Edwina, Countess Mountbatten. Ruth's engagement to WWI flying ace, Captain Alec Cunningham-Reid, was making headlines at the time, and her debutante ball, graciously hosted by her sister at Brook House, was the social event of the season. Ruth Ashley's elegant appearance, with her captivating smile and elegant gown, exudes the sophistication and glamour of the Roaring Twenties high society. Her sister, Edwina, standing proudly by her side, adds an air of regality and support to the occasion. However, the marriage between Ruth and Captain Cunningham-Reid did not last, and he later sued her for half her fortune, causing a significant scandal in the press. Despite this, Ruth's debutante year remains an iconic moment in the history of British high society, and this photograph serves as a testament to her beauty and grace during that time. This image is part of the Yevonde Portrait Archive, housed at the ILN/Mary Evans Picture Library, and offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of the British aristocracy during the 1920s.
