Bystander Cover: A Historic Tennis Match between Rt. Hon. Arthur Balfour and Anthony Frederick (Tony) Wilding in 1917 This photograph captures a rare moment in tennis history as the Rt. Hon. Arthur Balfour, a prominent British statesman and keen amateur tennis player, partners with four-time Wimbledon Men's Singles Champion, Anthony Frederick (Tony) Wilding, in a friendly doubles match on Centre Court at Wimbledon in July 1917. The impromptu game saw Balfour playing in borrowed flannels, showcasing the camaraderie and passion for the sport that united these two remarkable men. Arthur Balfour, a former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, was an occasional student of Tony Wilding's tennis techniques. Wilding, hailing from New Zealand, had an impressive tennis career, winning the Wimbledon Men's Singles Championship in 1910, 1911, 1912, and 1913. His championship run came to an end in 1914 when he was defeated by Australian Norman Brookes in straight sets. Tragically, Wilding's life was cut short when he lost his life near Neuve Chapelle, France, on 9 May 1915, during the Battle of Aubers Ridge, while serving in the British Army during World War I. This photograph, taken in 1912, is a testament to the enduring spirit of sportsmanship and the unique bond between two exceptional figures in tennis history. The image is a captivating addition to any tennis or historical collection and offers a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era.
