The future monarch, then Prince Boris Klemens Robert Maria Pius Ludwig Stanislaus Xaver (Boris Clement Robert Mary Pius Louis Stanislaus Xavier), is seen in military uniform, standing next to a Bulgarian soldier. Boris came to the throne in 1918, following the abdication of his father, King Ferdinand I, after the defeat of Bulgaria in World War I.
