EDITORS COMMENTS
A Moment of Triumph and Camaraderie at the British Mediterranean Fleet Sports Day - Prize Giving, 1923 In this evocative photograph, Admiral Sir Osmond de Beauvoir Brock, GCB, KCMG, KCVO, spins a 'bender' - a nautical term for telling an engaging tale - as he presents prizes during the Prize Giving ceremony at the Ben-Marl Stadium. The event was organized by the crews of HMS Benbow and HMS Marlborough of the 4th Battle Squadron. HMS Marlborough, an Iron Duke-class battleship of the British Royal Navy, is named in honor of John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. Built between January 1912 and June 1914 at Devonport Royal Dockyard, she entered service just prior to the First World War. Assigned to the Mediterranean Fleet after the war, Marlborough took part in the Allied intervention in the Russian Civil War in the Black Sea (1919-1920). She also participated in the Greco-Turkish War. The Admiral's animated storytelling adds a touch of warmth and levity to the formal ceremony, as sailors and officers gather around the table, eagerly listening to his every word. The prizes, cups, and medals, proudly displayed on the table, serve as tangible reminders of their athletic achievements during the British Mediterranean Fleet Sports Day. This photograph, taken in the 1920s, offers a glimpse into the rich history and camaraderie of the British Royal Navy during a time of peace and rebuilding after the First World War.
