EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the historic moment known as the "Flight of the Seven Bishops" in June, 1688. The seven Anglican bishops, led by Bishop Henry Compton of London, are depicted here making their escape from London and the clutches of King James II, who had imprisoned them in the Tower of London for refusing to read his Declaration of Indulgence to their congregations. The Declaration granted religious freedoms to Catholics and non-Anglican Protestants, a move that threatened the established Church of England and alarmed many of its followers. The bishops' daring escape by boat on the River Thames was a turning point in the events leading to the Glorious Revolution, which would ultimately result in the deposition of King James II and the ascension of his daughter Mary II and her husband, William III of Orange. The new rulers would restore the Church of England to its former position and revoke the Declaration of Indulgence. The bishops' journey down the Thames was fraught with danger, as they had to avoid detection by James II's loyalists and the English navy. The image shows the bishops in their small boat, surrounded by the vast expanse of the Thames and the towering walls of the Tower of London in the background. The bishops' determined expressions and the billowing sails of their boat convey a sense of urgency and resolve. This photograph, from the Mary Evans Prints Online archive, offers a fascinating glimpse into a pivotal moment in British history. The Flight of the Seven Bishops marked the beginning of the end for King James II's reign and helped to secure the future of the Church of England. The image serves as a reminder of the courage and resilience of those who fought to preserve their religious and political freedoms.
