EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this photograph showcasing traditional Scottish clothing for boys, circa 1895. The image features an array of authentic Scottish garments and accessories, each embodying the rich heritage and history of the Highlands. At the heart of the ensemble, a young boy proudly wears a Highland doublet and vest (Figures 11 & 12), the traditional upper body attire for Scottish men, complete with intricate embroidery and a plaid pattern. The doublet is complemented by a pair of Scottish brogues (Figures 18 & 19), featuring the distinctive laced-up design and heavy soles that have become synonymous with Scottish footwear. Accessories play a crucial role in this ensemble, with both an undress sporran (Figure 13) and a dress sporran (Figure 12) adorning the waist. The undress sporran, worn with formal attire, is adorned with a plated shoulder brooch (Figures 20 & 21), showcasing the family crest or tartan. In contrast, the dress sporran, worn with the Highland dress, is typically more ornate and often features a silver mount and tassels. Adding a touch of regality to the outfit, the boy also carries a dirk (Figure 14), a traditional Scottish dagger, and a Skean Dhu (Figure 15), a small, single-edged knife used for sharpening the dirk. Lastly, the ensemble is completed with a Thistle Cap Brooch (Figures 16 & 17), a symbol of Scotland's national flower and a cherished emblem of Scottish heritage. This photograph, taken on Oxford Street, Holborn, or St. Viaduct, transports us back to a time when Scottish traditions were proudly worn and celebrated. The image offers a unique glimpse into the past, providing a captivating insight into the rich history and heritage of Scottish clothing for boys.
