EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting underwater photograph, a recently born Bottlenose Dolphin calf swims in blissful harmony with its mother in the crystal-clear waters of Oltremare Lagoon in Riccione, Italy. The pregnancy of the female dolphin, named Blue, lasted 54 weeks, and on July 2nd, 2010, at 8:02 am, she gave birth to a male calf, weighing approximately 16 kg and measuring 120cm in length. Within just 2 and a half hours of birth, the newborn calf began to take its mother's milk, feeding at an average of two to three times per hour. Blue, a 14-year-old female, was born in Delphinarium Rimini, Italy, in 1996. Her mate, Micha, a 25-year-old male, hails from Cuba and has been in Italy since 1989. This loving pair has provided a nurturing environment for their young, allowing the calf to grow and thrive. After just 20 days, the calf's weight had already increased to 31 kg. The Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) is a widely distributed and social marine mammal, found worldwide in shallow seas and coastal areas. Known for their intelligence and playful nature, these dolphins are a beloved sight in both the wild and in captivity. This heartwarming image captures the essence of their strong maternal bonds and the joy of new life.
