EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a heartwarming moment between a Bottlenose Dolphin mother and her newborn baby calf. The pair can be seen swimming gracefully together in the crystal-clear waters of Malta. The calf, born on July 20th, 2010 at 15:30, weighed approximately 15 kg and measured about 1m in length at birth. The mother, named Onda, is a 14-year-old female originally from Cuba but has been residing as a guest at the grand Mediterraneo Dolphinarium since 2003. The father, Lucas, also hails from Cuba and is just twelve years old. Gestation for this species of dolphin typically lasts around twelve months. In this monitored environment at Marineland Ltd's Mediterraneo Marine Park in Malta, this photograph represents part of their species propagation program. It showcases the beauty and tenderness of dolphin parenting as well as highlighting the importance of nurturing and affection within marine mammal communities. While nursing can last up to two years for these dolphins, it is noteworthy that even by four months old, the calf can begin feeding itself independently - marking an important milestone known as weaning. This extraordinary image not only offers insight into the natural history of these magnificent creatures but also serves as a reminder of our responsibility to protect and preserve their habitat worldwide.
