EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken circa 1910, showcases the breathtaking view of the Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul, Turkey, with the majestic Rumeli Hisari fortress gracing the European shoreline. Constructed by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmet II in an astonishingly short period of four months between 1451 and 1452, the fortress was an essential strategic fortification prior to his conquest of Constantinople, now Istanbul. The Rumeli Hisari, also known as Rumeli Hisarı or Roumeli Hisarı, is a formidable castle with imposing towers and battlements, designed to protect the Bosphorus entrance against potential invaders. After the 16th century, the castle served as a prison, and it was meticulously restored in 1953 to honor the 500th anniversary of the conquest of Istanbul. The Bosphorus, a natural strait that connects the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara, is a vital waterway for international trade and transportation. In this photograph, traditional Turkish boats can be seen navigating the strait, adding a picturesque touch to the scene. The Rumeli Hisari fortress stands proudly as a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of Istanbul and Turkey, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and travelers alike.
